The Dish
CJ’s Sports Bar on Riverside Drive is now open for lunch from 11am til 2pm daily. We arrived last week to check out their new lunch menu and weekly specials, and as always, owners Chuck and John were there to greet us, along with our friendly bartender/waitress, Peggy. CJ’s is known for their great bar food, so there were quite a few patrons already there at noonish enjoying a quick bite and a cold beer. Because the establishment is 18 and up, there were a few smokers too, but the air was cool and the menu inviting. Appetizers such as Spinach & Artichoke Ragoons ($6.95) and Chicken Quesadillas ($7.95), a large variety of burgers including one topped with a fried egg, and another more curious burger topped with Captain Crunch and peanut butter (in which Chuck says you just have to try it) were just a few of the offerings among Melts, Sandwiches, Wraps and Salads. However, we opted for the daily lunch special (just $6.95) of Meatloaf, green beans and mashed potatoes. Other weekly offerings include Friday’s Grouper Basket and Monday’s Grilled Chicken. And CJ’s did not dissapoint. It was a quick, delicious and affordable lunch.
Since I moved to Macon, CJ’s has been a place that I wander too often, when I’m feeling in the mood for some good, serious comfort food. I live downtown, and I’m completely guilty of not doing enough that I can’t walk to, but when the mood hits for some feel good eating, its CJ’s that I usually turn to. Chuck and John are the bar owners that I would aspire to be. Come midnight, you probably won’t see them whooping and hollering on a table top about being bar owners, but come nine a.m., they’re there, side by side, working on getting another day up and going in a business that is anything but easy. They are some of my oldest customers, and probably my favorite. So yes, this review is not objective, because I’m a fan. However, when you’re talking about something like a Grilled Cheese Burger who gives a crap if your objective. And when I say Grilled Cheese Burger (9.95) I Mean GRILLED CHEESE burger, not grilled cheeseburger. That’s right. A giant chopped sirloin patty with a slice of bacon and two grilled cheese sandwiches for the bun. It’s decadent, over the top, and I ate and enjoyed every last drop.
There has never been a single time when a suggested lunch visit to Tokyo Alley has been met with anything less than enthusiastic daydreams of Red Curry Chicken and noodle salad. It was the first meal I had there and I’ve never switched. Though normally not such a creature of habit, I can’t help myself because nowhere else in town makes it so good. The only addition to my ritual has been to start things off with one of their cheese sticks, which contains crabmeat and comes with a tangy red dipping sauce (yeah, I’m from Macon and I have no idea what that stuff is called).
If you’ve lived on the Zebulon side of town for any amount of time, I’d be willing to bet you’ve found yourself at Polly’s Corner Café more than once. As much a staple for that side of town as any restaurant has been for the last decade or so, Polly’s offers down-home service, a great atmosphere (with an upstairs bar!) and best of all, some great food. When I think Polly’s, I think seafood, though they offer much more than that. From a Chicken Finger Basket, to Cajun Chicken Sandwiches ($7.75), Scramble Dogs, Steaks, and great appetizers, Polly’s has great staples on their menu for every empty stomach. Still, it’s the swimmers that stand out. They serve up fresh shrimp several ways, they boil them ($12.25), fry them, and if you like, sauté them in a white wine, butter and garlic broth. Their claim to fame is their daily lunch specials featuring whole, bone-in Catfish or a 10-piece Shrimp basket served with fries, coleslaw and jalepeno hushpuppies for just $7!
